This year marks a full decade of support from our brilliant friends at Tenors Unlimited— whose voices, kindness, and commitment have uplifted Harrison’s Fund in the most powerful ways.
And on Friday 12th December, they’ll be doing it again—bringing their soaring harmonies and signature warmth to St Martin’s Church, East Horsley for another unforgettable Christmas concert in aid of Harrison’s Fund.
But the story of how we met? Well, that’s a song in itself.
Carry You — A Song Born from a Conversation
Paul writes below...
“Those who’ve attended one of our tour shows will be familiar with the story surrounding our song ‘Carry You’ – for those that haven’t…
Several years ago, I was in our local coffee shop in Cobham with my wife, when she commented that the same chap was in there most days, using it as his office.
This chap turned out to be Alex Smith – we know this because my wife is super-friendly and needed to satisfy her curiosity.
She quickly ascertained what Harrison’s Fund was and Alex’s involvement and it turned out that, rather ambitiously, he was planning an Ironman triathlon whilst carrying Harrison. We were both moved and inspired and promised to do something to help – being an ex-sprinter, I didn’t much fancy an Ironman!
So, I came home and sat down at the piano to write a song, a lullaby dedicated to Harrison – the words and music actually flowed pretty quickly and it tells a story of a father reassuring his child that he will metaphorically ‘Carry’ them, whilst also alluding to the actual feat of Alex competing in the triathlon with Harrison (‘you help me swim against the tide’). In the end, the father realises that his strength is actually derived from the love of his child and they are carrying each other.
The term ‘carry you’ is also special to me, as my son used to think it was one word and would say ‘carry you me’ when he wanted to be picked up. The song got to number 4 in the classical download charts when it was released.
It’s an honour to continue to support this fantastic charity and we receive such lovely comments about the song and the story when we perform it in our shows.
I guess the moral of the story is to do the opposite of what we were told to do as children: Always talk to strangers – you never know where the conversation will lead and what new friends you will make.”
Ten years later, and that spontaneous conversation in a coffee shop has blossomed into a beautiful partnership that continues to lift our mission—and our spirits.
We couldn’t be more grateful.
