Your monthly Q&A with Maxine—Duchenne parent and HF Fundraising & Chrysalis Grant Manager
As we move into the summer months, many families begin preparing for a big shift: the end of one school chapter and the start of another. For families navigating Duchenne, these transitions can bring a whirlwind of emotions—from excitement and pride to anxiety and logistical overwhelm.
Speaking personally, my son—who was diagnosed with Duchenne at age 2—is currently preparing to move from a mainstream primary school into a new specialist (SEN) setting. It’s a move we feel incredibly grateful for, and it’s absolutely the right fit for him. But even with that reassurance, I won’t pretend it’s been easy.
There’s a long list of things to consider:
Making sure medical needs are clearly communicated
Updating or finalising the EHCP
Coordinating with both schools on transition days
Helping your child prepare emotionally
And all the while managing your own feelings about letting go of what’s familiar
There have been moments of joy—when you see staff truly ‘get’ your child—and moments of worry, when you’re chasing paperwork or unsure how your child will adjust. It’s a lot to carry, and if you’re in the thick of it now, I want you to hear this clearly:
You are not alone.
If you’d like to chat things through, ask for signposting, or even just take a breather over a virtual cuppa, I’m here. Sometimes it helps just to know someone else has been there—and still is.
And if you’ve got questions you’d like me to cover in future editions of Ask Max, I’d love to hear from you.
Take care of yourself, and remember: your best is more than enough.
With care,
Maxine
